#4 Yawning

Thom Rainer says that the #4 thing on his list that distracts a preacher  is people yawning. He says, "So I worked on this sermon 15 hours and this guy can't stop yawning. Maybe he was up all night, but I would rather him stay home and sleep." I agree that it is insulting to yawn in someone’s face. I challenge my students in this regard constantly, because the body-language of yawning screams, “You are boring me!” I go on to teach them that they do not have to yawn, especially when in the presence of company because there is actually a trick to stop it. When the yawn (or sneeze for that matter) begins to come, just place your index finger under your nose, push down and up until it feels a little uncomfortable. It will stop a yawn or a sneeze in its tracks. It will also encourage your preacher to keep going!

John Wayne on Liberals

Here an interesting interview with John Wayne in regards to his views on liberalism. I must caution you that he uses some strong language so don't get offended.

A Picture of Adultery

Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul. Wounds and dishonor he will get, And his reproach will not be wiped away. - Proverbs 6:32-33

#5 People Frowning

Thom Rainer says that #5 on his list of things that distract a preacher is people frowning. To be honest with you, many Christians look like they have been baptized in lemon juice. Their faces are always puckered and they look like they just smelled something really bad. That shouldn't be. If there should be any people in this world who have a smile on their faces, it should be the children of God. Seriously, if God never did one more thing for us after salvation, it would be more than we deserved. Smile when the preacher looks at you in the service!

Going Through the Fire

1 Peter 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,

Wiersbe says, “When God allows his children to go through the fire, he keeps his eye on the clock and his hand on the thermostat.  If we rebel, He may reset the clock, but if we submit, He will not permit us to suffer one minute too long.”

Temptation is that which puts to the test.  Trials sent by God do this.  A test is never employed for the purpose of injury.  A weight is attached to a rope, not to break it, but to prove it.  Pressure is applied to a boiler, not to burst it, but to certify its power of resistance.”

First Openly Gay Lutheran Bishop

Rev. Guy Erwin: First Openly Gay Lutheran Bishop Elected To ELCA Southwest California Synod

"The election of Pastor Erwin to the office of bishop occurred because he was the best candidate, not because he was a partnered gay man."

It's hard to believe that we have come this far. However, the last time I checked the Bible does still say in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God." (NKJV)

Alternatives to Boy Scouting

Catholic Leaders Urge Support For Boy Scouts After Shift On Gays

I know that many are already considering an alternative to our beloved Boy Scouting. I was reading the above article which also includes a list of alternatives that are offered by Christian organizations which include the Salvation Army, Southern Baptists, etc. Check it out.
