Horace Bushnell, a Congregationalists pastor who lived 1802 - 1876 once said, "Nothing makes infidels more surely than the spinning, splitting, nerveless refinements of theology." I believe there is some merit in his sentiment. I also believe from his writings that he deserted the Christian faith.
There is something in us that wants to question authority of any kind. Unfortunately, it usually leads to more questions that answers many times.
It was Walt Whitman (1819-1892) who encouraged Americans to "re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book" and to "dismiss whatever insults your own soul."
Wow. That left the gate pretty much wide open.
